Jade At one time it was belived there was only one type of jade. Since 1863, geologists have divided "jade" into jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is usually green or mottled green and white, but occasionally it can be violet from traces of iron. Nephritic jade ranges in color from dark green to creamy white. Both stones may be sold as ""jade."" To the Chinese, jade represented courage, wisdom, mercy, justice, fidelity, and a host of other good qualities. When Chinese couples became engaged, they presented one another with gifts carved from nephritic jade. Longevity and wealth are probably the qualities most strongly associated with jade. Jade scarabs have been valued as good luck charms for centuries.
